Eyelid Surgery in Chicago / Des Plaines

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may be performed for aesthetic or reconstructive purposes. In either case, the procedure is intended to reduce the amount of excess skin, fat and/or muscle from the lower or upper eyelids, thereby improving the overall appearance of the eyes.
Upper / Lower Eyelid Lift Surgery Overview
Upper eyelid lift surgery helps reduce the appearance of droopy eyelids, which are often caused by the natural aging process. Poor muscle tone or nerve damage may also result in sagging eyelid skin, a condition known as ptosis, which may lead to loss of peripheral vision. Upper eyelid lift surgery involves incisions along the natural creases of the upper eyelid. Next, the fat and skin are removed and, in some cases, tissue and muscle may be rearranged for the best aesthetic results. Once the desired results are achieved, the incisions are closed with very fine sutures to minimize scarring.
Lower eyelid lift surgery, which can also be combined with upper eyelid lift, is beneficial for patients who have moderate excess skin and/or puffiness just below the eyes. It can also be used as an effective remedy for a condition known as “tear trough” deformity, a hollowness that develops in the separation between the lower eyelid and the cheek. Lower eyelid lift incisions are generally created just below the eye or on the inside of the lower eyelid.
Blepharoplasty surgery may last anywhere from one to two hours and is generally performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Following surgery, you will be sent home to recuperate with specific postoperative instructions. During the recovery time, you may experience some swelling and bruising around the affected area, which generally subsides within a few days.
