The VISX CustomVue™ Laser Vision Correction
VISX CustomVue is an individualized laser vision correction procedure that is WaveScan-driven. This procedure enables Dr. James Katz, a foremost Chicago laser eye surgery and corneal surgery specialist, to measure and correct unique imperfections in each individual's vision that could not have been measured before. Nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatic individuals have the potential to achieve a new level of vision better than that achieved with glasses and contact lenses.
In December 2004, the FDA approved the treatment of hyperopia also known as farsightedness and hyperopic astigmatism with the CustomVue Hyperopic LASIK procedure. This approval is specifically for wavefront-guided LASIK correcting hyperopia up to +3.00D MRSE with astigmatism up to +2.00D. The CustomVue procedure is the first U.S. approved wave-front guided laser treatment for hyperopia.
WaveScan Technology
The WaveScan technology was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. For the first time WaveScan technology has now been applied to laser vision correction capturing unique imperfections in each individual's vision that could not have been measured before. The VISX WaveScan instrument measures focusing errors of the eye. It achieves this by measuring light as it reflects out of the eye with a camera sensor. A wavefront map produces a picture exhibiting rays of light as they travel through the eye. Dr. Katz uses the WaveScan's digital information then transfers it to the laser using the CustomVue procedure, providing a new level of precision and accuracy. This new level of measurement provides 25 times more precision than standard measurements used for glasses or contact lenses.
Beyond and Better Than Glasses and Contact Lenses
Glasses and contact lenses are limited in their ability to correct unique imperfections in each individual's vision. In fact, thousands of individuals have the same prescription. This new level of measurement provides 25 times more precision than standard measurements used for glasses or contact lenses. With the CustomVue procedure, no two "prescriptions" are identical. Individuals are able to achieve the full potential of their vision.
Safety and Visual Quality Results
CustomVue offers an individual the potential to be free from annoying halos, glare and ghosting as well as to enjoy the ability to see clearly at night. Four times as many people were very satisfied with their night vision after the CustomVue procedure, compared to their night vision before with glasses or contact lenses.
One year after the VISX CustomVue procedure:
- 100% of people could pass a driving test without glasses or contact lenses
- 98% of people could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contact lenses
- 70% of people could see better than 20/20 without glasses or contact lenses
Six-month VISX CustomVue Hyperopic LASIK:
A six-month VISX CustomVue hyperopic LASIK evaluation of clinical study participants showed that more than four times as many people were very satisfied with their night vision after the VISX CustomVue hyperopia procedure, compared to their night vision before with glasses or contacts.
